Anglican church elevates Rivers Speaker
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon
Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, was among 31church faithful elevated to the
Knighthood of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion on Sunday,
February 4, 2018.
The event took place at the St Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Hospital
Road, Port Harcourt, and marked the speaker’s investiture as a Knight
of St Christopher, with his wife, Mrs Rose Uga Ibani, now a Lady
Auxiliary in the church.
In a sermon before the investiture, the Very Rev. Richard Ibituru
Hart, described the knights as defenders of the truth who must
dedicate their life to the truth all their days on earth. He charged
them to stand, fight and never go down in battles to defend the church
and the truth, reminding them however, that in the business of
defending the church, one might shed his own blood.
Speaking with the media at the reception ground, the speaker described
the elevation as a call to higher service in the house of God.
“This elevation is a call to higher service in the house of God and
for me to be so honoured in the house of God gives a sense of
fulfilment. I believe, this day, God made it possible. God also made
it possible for me to accept this high honour; otherwise, I’ve been
turning down several high honours made to me by man but this is from
“There is no high office on earth that will not make you to serve God
because in the first place, that office was given to you by God; there
is no schedule that would have taken you away from God. Yes, in public
position I have other duties to perform as a secular position but I
should also hold on to the faith because it is the faith that keeps
you; it is the benevolence of God. His grace is all sufficient.”
The Rt. Hon, now Sir, Ibani commended the Anglican Communion and the
Bishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Rt. Reverend Ralph Cornelius
Ebirien for finding him fit and worthy of the elevation.
While praying for all who graced the occasion to also receive their
own honours from God, the speaker admonished Nigerians to seek peace
wherever they are and continue to keep the peace because “with good
neighbourliness, the society will be a better place for all”.
Notable at the occasion were honourable members of the Rivers State
House of Assembly, chiefs and titled men from Andoni, clergymen, and
people of all walks of life.
