A former head of state in Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda has opposed the hate speech bill proposed by the National Assembly.
General Babangida made his position known while playing host to National leadership of Nigerian Union of Journalists who paid him a courtesy call in his country home in Minna, Niger State. The ex-head of state wondered how a bill that was rejected by the 8th Assembly will be re-introduced by the 9th Assembly. He stated that Nigeria is still developing and people should be allowed to express themselves. He pledged his support for opposition of the bill.
Earlier, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Chief Christopher Isiguzo told the ex-head of state that they were in his residence to seek his support to turn down the bill.
Many Nigerians have rejected the bill that prescribes death penalties for offenders.
