A female Journalist Today morning 27 November 2019 on Nigeria Info 92.3FM revealed that female Journalists face more sexual harassment in work place from their Boss than outside .She made the assertion during Training of Rivers Women Journalists on Gender Equity And Safety/ Gender Sensitive Reporting as organised by Nigeria Association Of Women Journalists In Collaboration With Norwegian Union Of Journalists.The revelation is worrisome.More shocking is the revelation by another female Journalist that the some senior male Journalists the ladies run to for help end up humiliating the victims and tell them is normal in the newsroom setting.The Female Journalist stated that serious advocacy is needed as some male Journalists who are their superior do not see anything wrong in touching the breasts and buttocks of female colleagues in the office.
The leadership of the women Journalists resolved to embark on sensitization to media houses to set up sexual complaints desk.
It is an irony that some male Journalists who expose lecturers involved in sex for grades in University through their reportage are the ones harassing the female journalists who are the subordinates in the office. Journalism and Activism are like seismic twins.The two trade are very identical. A male journalist who by all ramification is an activist should not be involved in such act. As a Journalist apart from keeping the public informed,you also expose ills in the society and speak indirectly or directly for the masses through credible reportage. Journalism is activism,so activists should not be seen indulging in such act. For the fact that a male Journalist is opportuned to be the Boss in office is not a criteria that a junior female colleague must accept love advances of the male Boss.
Meanwhile a Human Rights Group in Rivers State,Civil Rights Council, has join in condemning the act and also call for an end to it.
The Human Rights group vowed to join in the fight against sexual harassment of female journalists by their Senior male colleagues in the office.
