The Rivers State Attorney general and Commissioner for justice, Dr. Zaccheus Adango has revealed that the Violence Against Persons Prohibition(VAPP) bill 2019 seeks to eliminate violence in public and private life.
The Attorney General of Rivers Zaccheus Adango made the assertion in his opening remarks on Thursday 19 December 2019 during the public hearing on VAPP bill 2019 on the floor of the Assembly.
Dr .Adango through his representative explained that the bill provides protection,punishment and compensation for victims of violence .Dr.Adango stated that the bill covers most of the prevelant violence in Nigeria such as physical violence,physiological violence,socio-economic violence among others.
The Attorney General revealed that the bill if passed into law makes it a crime to abandon one’s spouse and other dependants without provision of necessaries. He added that the bill provides for protection of victims of domestic violence.
On his part the Chairman Ad-hoc committee on VAPP bill 2019,Hon Enemi Alabo George disclosed that the bill carters for certain set of infractions against persons. He stated the bill if passed into law will solve a lot of problems for those who have been having difficult to prosecuting certain category of of cases that leads to offences of VAPP.
The Chairperson of International Federation Of Women Lawyers(FIDA) Mrs Ngozi Egoseve, representative of other women group who were in attendance gave their support for the bill.
Our correspondent reports that the Ad-hoc committee will submit the report of the public hearing to the House for debate on plenary.
