The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer,Superintendent of Police(SP) Bright Edafe has said the Police do not need consent of the public to grant bail to suspect over bailable offences.

SP Edafe made the disclosure in his X- handle on Saturday April 4,2024.He said 

“Uncles and aunties, the Police do not need your consent to grant bail to a suspect over a bailable offense”.

The Delta State Police Spokesperson is making the revelation amidst complaints by complainants that some Police stations are granting bail to suspects without their(Complainants) consent.

Meanwhile Nigeria Police Act of 2020 part vii 

Section (D) 1 which was cited by our reporter states that where a suspect has been taken into Police custody without a warrant for an offence other than offence punishable with death an officer in charge shall inquire into the case and release the suspected arrested subjection to subjection(2) where it will not be possible tp bring the suspect before a court having jurisdiction with respect to the offence alleged within 24 hours.
